Telangana Ki Daaredi

Kartik Dayanand - Telangana Ki Daaredi - Mind u Read

If you know the language or follow Telugu films, you obviously know the inspiration behind the title of this post. For those who wonder what it means...this title is based on the recent blockbuster Telugu film Attarintiki Daaredi (which way to my in law’s house?) starring Pawan Kalyan. I have used the same format, replacing the word ’Attarintiki’ (in law’s house) with ’Telangana’ - the new state proposed to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh (AP).

But Telugu is a tricky language, the word Daaredi in the context of my blog could give the title two different meanings...

Which way to Telangana?
Or
Is there a way out for Telangana?

Similarly, the questions surrounding and supporting the creation of Telangana are quite tricky. They sound logical when viewed from one side and extremely illogical from another angle. Most people I know are oscillating between both the angles or are plainly indifferent. To be honest, I was indifferent too, but the more I think about the reasons why Telangana is being created, the more bizarre they seem to me. Through this blog post I would like to highlight some of those points.

I was warned in advance that this is a sensitive topic and I should tread carefully, especially where it concerns Hyderabad. I see no reason why I shouldn't speak my mind, that too when I come from that region. If you want to counter my views you are most welcome to leave your comments below so that everyone can see your side of the story too. Here goes my version...

Why Telangana?

These are the most common reasons attributed to creation of Telangana by the media, politicians as well as the common man on the street.

1. Economics

Andhra people are looting Telangana

If the above statement is true, then I wonder what most students-engineers from AP are doing in USA. Are they looting USA or contributing to their economy? I wonder how one can loot a region by seeking employment there.

Let me paraphrase the same question:

Andhra politicians are looting Telangana

Sounds more like a case of sour grapes. Tell me which state has politicians that don't loot their people. Only difference here - the loot is being diverted to another region. It sounds more like a case of two robbers fighting over who gets the bigger share. Maybe this is a real issue, but not for the common man.

One more way to pose the same question:

Andhra entrepreneurs are looting Telangana

If that holds true, then blame Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Sergey Brin too for opening Microsoft, Facebook and Google offices in Hyderabad. Same question holds true for every MNC in operation today. How does one loot a region by creating employment there? I have no clue.

2. Culture

Andhra people have destroyed-suppressed Telangana culture

The key things that define the culture of a place are clothes, food, music, literature, architecture and above all cinema.

To be honest, it pains me a lot every time I see remnants of the bygone era vanish into thin air. Be it an Irani cafe being replaced by a Coffee Day or a single screen theatre that makes way for a mall cum multiplex, or the neighbourhood kirana shop being replaced by a Big Bazaar outlet. Even the roadside mirchi bandi guy near my place has been replaced by another roadside Chinese food stall.

Culture today as we know it is an assimilation of various influences, thanks to wide availability of choices right from choice of food to choice of TV channels, etc. It is unfair to say that one culture has suppressed another, if at all the blame has to be placed the guilty parties are many, why single out Andhra region, you would be better off blaming liberalisation. Also this isn't an issue that is unique to Telangana region alone.

I somehow can't avoid bringing in USA every time I talk about AP. Just consider who they crowned as Miss America recently. It is an Indian origin Telugu girl - Nina Davuluri. Her family migrated to USA in early 80's, hardly 30 years ago, yet she is considered American enough to be crowned Miss America. When America can be such an inclusive society I wonder why Telangana has an issue with Andhra settlers, most of whom moved there in the 50's, almost 60 years ago. They are now as much a part and parcel of the culture of Telangana as anyone else is.

There is also talk of Telangana people being ridiculed by the Telugu film industry. This reminds me of Sardars and black people being made fun of in Bollywood and Hollywood respectively. Yet, that does not stop those communities from producing achievers and world leaders. Mixing entertainment with politics is a concoction that wouldn't solve any real world problems.

With respect to other stories about Telangana culture being neglected. The age of the Internet and social networking especially makes that claim redundant. No one can stop anyone these days from saying or doing the things one wants to. We don't live in a zamindari feudal system anymore. That belongs to our grandfather’s and their grandfather’s generation. Which brings me to my next point.

3. Grandfather’s Dream

I asked a few youngsters why they are supporting the cause for a separate Telangana state and the most often heard reason is this - it was my grandfather’s dream.

Let me tell you something - my grandfather might have thought so too at one point of time. I recently read his autobiography which he wrote in 1993 a few years before he passed away in 1997. He grew up and studied in Vishakhapatnam under the Madras Presidency and then worked at Nalgonda, Warangal and then Hyderabad under the Nizams. He then went to the UK and came back as the first Neuro Surgeon of what then became the state of Andhra Pradesh. In his book ’No Ugly Scars - An Autobiography of a Surgeon’ he very clearly states that the best among the three administrations was that of the Hyderabad state under the Nizams. The state flourished under them and was open to new ideas.

That was ages ago. I wonder what he would say if he were still alive today. In his book he also gives out in great detail some episodes from the Telangana agitation in 1969 when he was the Principal of Osmania Medical College. People back then had a good reason to fight for a separate state. Why go so far, just rewind back to 1993, the year I got into Architecture college at JNTU in Hyderabad.

Rewind to 1993

Back then, there were only two colleges in the whole of AP where one could study Architecture. There were 60 seats at School of Planning and Architecture-JNTU in Hyderabad and another 20 at Andhra University in Vizag. Out of the 60 at JNTU the seats were further divided into quotas for people from Telangana, Andhra and Rayalseema regions. If I recollect correctly, there were more seats reserved for Andhra region compared to Telangana. Add to that the regular quotas for caste based reservations. So if one was a regular candidate from Hyderabad appearing for the Architecture entrance exam, he or she had to be in the top 25 ranks out of the thousands that applied for the course.

I secured 26th rank. Had to wait painfully till the third round of counselling and return empty handed. I got the admission few months after the course started, only because someone had quit the course after joining it initially. There were other candidates from places like Vijayawada, Guntur, Ananthapur who secured ranks above 100 but still got admission in the first round because the Andhra and Rayalaseema quotas were not filled yet. If you would have asked me back then if I was at a disadvantage because I came from Telangana region, I would have definitely said yes. Would I want a separate state, I would have said yes again.

Would I say the same thing today?

No!

Here is why...

By the time I finished college in 1998, there were a few private Architecture colleges that cropped up. A few years after that I even heard that there were so many seats available that even JNTU was begging students to join their course. How quickly things changed. Reminded me of how landline phones which were once a status symbol suddenly became obsolete in the face of the mobile phone revolution. Times changed, people changed, perceptions changed, fortunes changed, our landscapes changed, nothing remained the same anymore.

We are now in 2013. Most of us don't dream of government jobs as our only means of employment anymore and it is the private sector that is driving the economy. Things weren't the same in the 60s during my grandfather’s time. All they had to depend on were government jobs and it was justified that people were struggling for a separate state. It now seems irrelevant and outdated as a concept, because the playground is much bigger now and the goal posts have moved since our grandfather’s times.

Giving due respect to our grandfather’s dreams, it would serve us best if we had new dreams instead, to fix issues that are more in tune with current times.

Now consider this:

Assume everything I say above is flawed. There is absolutely no logic in anything that I say. Assume all the issues stated above are real and endanger the well being of people from Telangana region.

What is solution being suggested as a way out? Separation!

What baffles my mind is, what one could not achieve by living together for decades, how does one plan to achieve by separating.

Telangana movement is a case of expecting a wrong to be fixed by another wrong.
As the saying goes...Two wrongs don't make a right.

Be it the sharing of natural resources or manpower distribution, all I can foresee is anarchy. For Telangana and Andhra are not two separate entities anymore, they have become one over a long period of time.

When an Attarintiki Daaredi released, it is the eyeballs of people from both regions that made it such a huge success. How can one eye be better than the other? Drawing lines between them according to me is a great crime. That is why I use the line ’Telangana Ki Daaredi’ as the title for my post, for I really don't know the way to Telangana today, I don't recognise it anymore and neither do I see a way out of this mess for Telangana.

Ideally I could end my post here but I will add a wee bit more info for you to dwell upon. This might probably explain why passions run so high today and how this whole situation got created in the first place. This has got something to do with eyeballs again...

Blue eyes and Brown eyes!

In 1968 an American school teacher Jane Elliot conducted a racism exercise on her class of 3rd graders. She separated her class of cheerful kids into two categories - those with blue eyes and those with brown eyes. On the first day she announced that blue eyed kids were superior in intelligence compared to brown eyed kids. Hence they were given special privileges over the brown eyed kids. Within minutes the blue eyed kids started acting superior and aggressive while the brown eyed kids started feeling inferior and went into a shell. On the third day she reversed the tables and announced that she made a mistake and said brown eyed kids were better than blue eyed kids. The brown eyed kids who were low until then started feeling superior and the blue eyed kids were down. She finally revealed the truth that none was superior over the other much to the cheers and relief of all the kids. You can watch the entire video here....

What this documentary shows us is the startling nature of humans. Once someone points out that one is superior or inferior to others, our behaviour changes.

Something similar is happening right now in AP. Instead of a class teacher we have politicians manipulating public perceptions and leading them to believe that they are the oppressed ones. Left alone, this Telangana agitation would have died a silent death if not for the vested interests of a few political parties and individuals.

The people, what can they do, they are as gullible as the kids in that classroom from 1968. Sadly, this isn't an experiment inside a classroom but an agitation that only seems to get worse with time. Hope good sense prevails and an amicable solution is arrived at soon. Least I could do on my part was to write this post. Rest, I will leave to you and your good senses.

Cheers and prayers!!!

    One more thing:

We feel India gained its so called "Independence", from foreign rule! But have we really been able to make a difference, using our freedom and Independence? How many of us truly feel we'd have done MUCH BETTER under british rule? Have we ever thought were we are now, from where we actually ought to be today? Have we learned our lessons from Japan, which rose as a Phoenix, from its ashes?
But alas, how many of us are actually bothered of the foreign national who is influencing our Nation's destiny now? How many of us think of doing something that can shake up the country's Politicians to think for the country and for our future rather than for themselves? NONE.. Not even me! I cant do ANYTHING myself, cos I am just ONE PERSON.
I just so wish we never got a Gandhi or a Nehru to rule us, courtesy the kind of news/affairs/facts that keep popping up about them so much!

Nice to hear that, can you tell me why were Andhra ppl were devided from Madras state in 1953, when Nehru and Ambedkar questioned the feasibility of the linguistic states. "Vasudaika kutumbam" aa roju gurkuraleda. Just after independence the first violent incidents post independence were by Andhra ppl for the sake of Separate Andhra with Madras as capital..... do you have an answer for them. 12. your telangana friends appear to be least bothered about the well-being of other telanganites and may be from the group "my-kids, my-flat, my-car, my-wife, my-life". Ask them to know more about their routes. Even I am proud to be called as a citizen of India first and then ofcourse one from Andhra Pradesh. And obviously telugu is my mother tongue and I am chanting telugu thalli prayer from childhood. I dont like TRS or any other T-acitivist mocking telugu thalli... its purely perverted act by them... but my point is do i still feel happy and proud to be from AP, while one region enjoys benefits and the other region continue to suffer at their cost? how long this should continue.... the same ppl giving bashans, cant question injustice done to others? what kind of opinion making is that?

  15. I support separation of state..being from Andhra region. I strongly believe that the current hesitation in Seemandhara is to get rights on Hyd (though they are calling it for united state). Reason being, all major educational institutions, hospitals. MNC are located in HYD. There is no IIT, REC, NIT in Seemandhara region. Seemandhara have very few well known educational institutions. If at all, central govt. includes HYD in TG state, none of the Seemandhara student will a seat (in convener quota) in Engineering colleges located in Hyd as they are non-locals. This is definitely an injustice to Seemandhara students. My knowledge is not sufficient to comment on Water and some other issues.

  17. Thanks for the info. I would still urge you to speak to more ppl from TG who are in rural areas and get more info. Dont talk about the separatism at all but jus the issues they are facing and compare with that of people in other region. Just an apple to apple comparison is what all I am looking for. Anyways, your writing skills are really good. My humble request to you is to think more on this and come up with something that can make atleast few people understand what the issue is about. While we all may not be a able to propose a solution, atleast the path we choose should be peacful and amicable, not that of hatred and mud-slinging. I urge whoever reads this to think of well-being of every human being including all telugites.

  18. During 1953, telugu people were spread out because of some treaties between Nijams and British. That was the actual history. So, to bring and put them together at one single place, related actions were taken. Whole telugu movie industry was in Madras by then. After the Andhra formation, slowly the industry started to move to a place in Andhra Pradesh... and that was decided to be Hyderabad...... if Andhra people's motive is/ was all about looting, then why was it let to be the place in "Telangana" region? Why shouldn't it be another city in Andhra region? For that matter, why should the Andhra capital be in Telangana region? Why had not the "Andhra" region people tried to have the capital form in their region? It was originally in Kurnool.... right? Let us please learn with our own minds before listening to politicians....... Things will make sense only then.....

  19. I find your analogies / comparisons rather silly...
if the SRC recommendations & Mulki rules were followed by the governments for the past 50 years, the current state of Telangana would have been much better and no bifurcation would be required. It is the neglect to follow these rules that led to the current situation. At this juncture, I do not believe there is no point in expecting the governments to follow the SRC / Mulki rules.

Pose a question to yourself - Why are people from Andhra region fighting to stay united?

    a. Is it because they really love to stay united?
    b. Is it because Hyderabad will not be part of Andhra?
    c. If Hyderabad is made part of Andhra, would the agitations in Andhra stop? I think it’s a YES
    d. Would the people from Andhra stop fighting for united AP if Hyderabad becomes a Union Territory? Your sour grapes analogy fits perfectly here.

    You quote
"Telangana movement is a case of expecting a wrong to be fixed by another wrong.
As the saying goes...Two wrongs don't make a right."

How can you say it is wrong?
Does any evidence suggest that Telangana will not benefit from bifurcation? Every state has its own way of dealing with
people / separation. If you quote Jharkand, quote Madras and AP separation as well. Was that considered wrong?

    So what is wrong here?
    a. Creation of Separate state for Telangana?
    b. Hyderabad not being made a UT?

Unless you have a way to make it right, do not say it is wrong. You can point fingers but it is wise to suggest a solution before pointing the finger.

    1. Economics -
Politicians looting… You say this is not an issue to common man. Why not? More Andhra politicians mean more looting and more diversion of funds to Andhra area, In spite of Telangana region considered to require tons of development compared to other areas in AP, the funds to develop regions are being diverted to Andhra districts. This does impact the COMMON MAN.

We are not just talking about politicians trying to fill their pockets. We are more interested in the development in the regions because majority of the leaders / ministers are from the Andhra area who are interested in the development of Andhra area.
If Telangana forms, Telangana leaders will loot (no doubt about that - no change with current situation ) and if the government wants to invest, they have no option other than to invest in Telangana thereby developing the region. We at the very least save the funds from moving over to the Andhra region. Let people invest in Telangana after the state formation. No one objects to that.
Just compare the numbers for poor farmers dying because of no water in Telangana and Andhra. What do you think the reason is? Funds for water projects allocated to Andhra and not to Telangana.

    2. Culture - This is a non issue for me. With development comes change in culture and there is no difference if it happens in Andhra or Telangana.

Why is it even being talked about?

I am not concerned about Café Day replacing Irani Chai.. I am more concerned about the basic necessities in life. Do people have water to drink /cultivate, do people have food to eat and feed their families. What is the reason behind people dying of hunger?

    3. Grandfather's Dream - I do not know where you got the stats from to say 'most often heard reason is this - it was my grandfather’s dream'. This is just BS to me.

People get inspired from other people including their ancestors but if the conditions are right, many people have a change in opinion (providing they are in good mental health condition)

I personally was not in favor of Telangana until I went through the stats for spending on projects including water, power, roads and employment stats in the state run organizations including courts.

  23. See the development that took in agriculture over the last 56 years from the formation of vishalandra or A.p. Your view points may not stand in total valid. refer the book (ed) by krishan rao and Subrahmanyam .2002: Development of Andhra Pradesh :1956-2001 A study of regional disparities. The book reveals that in every sphere of development there is a faster rate in Telengana districts in comparision to A.P. though the initial differences are glaring but such glaring differences are narrowing.

  24. The problems you speak of are also in Andhra. go to Srikakulam/Vizianagaram/Visakhapatnam districts. Apart from Vizag which has all central govt undertaking units, there is no development. Telangana culture or language is not mocked anywhere. I doubt if you ever travelled to other parts of the state to experience this. My Telangana friends in college used to mock my Vizag accent. I took it as fun. Vizag accent is made mockery of in Rajamundhry just 150 km away. No rivers in the above 3 districts. One Yeleru canal is still not fully operational. Economics : Revenue generation is more in Telangana even without Hyd and RR distt. Check central planning commission statistics. Expenditure is more too. Per capita revenue and expenditure in T is higher than Andhra. Where was this before 1956? Telangana had sent more CM to assembly than Andhra which sent on 3 people. It was NTR who brought an end to Patel patwari systems in telangana. None of the CM from T ever bothered with it. Chenna Reddy actually championed it.Andhra capitalists invested in hyderabad NOT Vizag. They looted pristine vizag sea side lands meant for afforestation. Even today Vizag has to beg Navy for allowing planes to land in the airport. Hyderabad has a spaning new world class airport. Kadupu manta maaku undali kaani meeku enduku. 32. That's nice analysis. I think the main problem with TGs (other than being pea-brained) is that they think their problems are unique and are there only for them. Everyone else is enjoying their lives, except them. And I agree with the 'inferiority complex' part. These guys are believing their politicians so blindly. which I'm really surprised. Even the statistics given in Justice. SKC report are being given lesser credibility as compared to KCR/KTR's speeches. (another fact that makes me think they lack basic intelligence).. God save my country, when will my brothers mature.

Blogger I appreciate ur talent in expressing ur view but ur silly in ur argument.. and do u know abt nagarjuna project??? Wch is in nalgonda dist border? That is the best example y there is a need of TG State. The project was proposed during nizam regime 20kms above the present proj aftr under going various tests On that land but as soon as hyd state merged with andhra the proj site was shifted forcefully 20km below the proposed site to benefit andhra leaving behind this issue there z high maintenance cost every year removing silt in summers that z loss to govt and huge loss to localities in the name of taxes..! Then how will u solve this prob kind of probs in United state plzzz ans anf most importantly v telanganites r not looking at u (andhra ppl) as our enemies eventhough there z much inequality shown to us in Ap state but ur showing us as criminals and other terrific human beings try to blog even though state bifurcates v vl be unite as telugu ppl but don't create evil thoughts in society my dear brother

  34. I really want to explore the genuineness of your accusation about NagarjunaSagar. You made 3 important statements:

    1. proj site was shifted forcefully 20km below the proposed site to benefit andhra
    2. eventhough warned by many civil enggs
    3. high maintenance cost every year removing silt

What is the source of this information? KCR's speeches?
1): For a river flowing anyway into Krishna district, how does changing the site 20KM downward benefit Andhra? Even before N'Sagar dam was built Krishna river anyway was always flowing through the Coastal districts.
2): Where are these 'warnings' recorded?
3): Why is this silt removal/maintenance not required if the site had been 20km upstream?

I've lived 3 years of my life in Nagarjuna Sagar. My relatives worked in the same project. I've never heard them say anything like this. (At that time they never even identified themselves as 'andhras' or 'telanganites')

Prove these accusations are genuine. Else go and join the flock of super-morons who parrot-mouth the speeches of TRS Politicians

  36. It is surprising how even intelligent and educated people fall for the whims of the politicians. AP is/was such a progressive state to be imitated. Now, it has become a laughing stock to the entire country with people quarrelling like small kids. Small kids are better - after sometime, they get back as friends. Don't understand why people don't try to find facts instead of blindly following politicians. Congress today has decided to give T not out of love, but for electoral gains. P V Narasimha Rao (from Telengana) and my favorite all time Telugu person was not even given proper burial even though he was a prime minister. Nobody complained about it. Where were these zealots then? It amazes me on how thin the arguments are for/against bifurcation instead of dealing with more serious issues that really affect the people on a daily basis. Look at the GoM coming up with more options than we would ever imagine and none of them belong to AP. And what are they doing? They are making a fool of the telugu people. Why? Because we don't have it in us to resolve differences. When two cats fight for the fish, the fox gets it. When Hyderabad is under the control of governor, none of the cats benefit from it.

  37. Hi Karthik,

Everyone has got their point of view...so as u...

Formation of Telangana is very clear by Congress. If not the coming government BJP is ready to. So Telangana had got its way. Now my question is "Andhra ki Dhikkedhi???".

Your vesrions first topic is ECONOMICS right? so we will start it from there:

    Andhra people are looting Telangana

    Andhra politicians are looting Telangana

    Andhra entrepreneurs are looting Telangana

A simple example for all the above:

Dairy development corporation of AP purchases milk from farmers across the state for distribution. For the same milk, in Andhra, the government pay Rs. 24 to the farmers and in Telangana they pay Rs. 22 per litre. Why is this so??? Do you have any answer?

OMG you were talking about US,Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, but you didn't talk a single word- Why people of Telangana are struggling for 60 years to be separated from Andhra Pradesh? No you will not, and no you can't because your DNA will not allow you to think of Telangana people.

All of you were talking about unity, thats great and appreciable, So why you Andhra people seperated from Tamil Nadu? Why your great leader Potti sri ramulu went on fasting to death to make Andhra as separate state?

    2. Culture

Yes Telangana had great culture which is destroyed-suppressed.

Even I had faced this situation as many of Telanganites. The language spoken in Telangana is considered as a bad dialect. While the language which is not even spoken in more than two districts is considered as a standard language?

Yes we had a culture of celebrating a festival called Bathukamma praising goddess with seasonally available flowers.

Bathukamma Panduga (Bathukamma Festival) is the largest and legendary festival of Telangana. It was started centuries ago and still celebrated as grand cultural event in this place. The legend of Batukamma Panduga is mentioned in one of the historical texts scripted in Telugu. But such a large festival is neither recognized by the government nor does the government even extend the official greetings to the people of Telangana on the day of Bathukamama Panduga.

And you people had a culture of enjoying cock fight by betting money.

Even after 54 years of geographical merger of two states (Andhra and Hyderabad States), both regions have not been completely integrated. There is vast divisiveness in terms of emotions, language, literature and culture of both the regions.

Telangana people had been fighting for justice from past 60 years. No common manin Telangana agreed merging of Telangana with Andhra and Rayalseema.

45% of the state income comes from Telangana region. When it comes to utilization of funds, the share of Telangana is only 28%.

Normally canals are dug to supply water to the crops from rivers for cultivation. The amount of land cultivated through canals in just Guntur district is MORE THAN the land cultivated with canals in entire Telangana region.

    * I don't know why Andhra people always say a false statement that we have developed Hyderabad. In fact you were developed in Hyderabad.

No one of you will analyse why people of Telangana were struggling for their own state.

What ever may be, formation of the Telangana state is for sure.

And i am very eager to see your next post Karthik-- "Aandhra ki Dhikkedhi".
