I caught bits of the match on the Sony Liv app.</div><div><br /></div>I had a doubt though and tweeted it out…<div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Great win by India again.<br /><br />I have a genuine question. <br /><br />How do you folks manage to find time to watch test matches when there are so many other distractions all over the internet and otherwise?<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/INDvENG?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#INDvENG</a></p>— Kartik Dayanand (@KartikDayanand) <a href="https://twitter.com/KartikDayanand/status/1434924405822353408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 6, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async="" charset="utf-8" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js"></script>
<br />Most people confirmed my doubt — a majority of them watch it in small bursts when there is some excitement in the game. They get to know about it on Twitter or other platforms and then jump in to watch that segment of the match.<br /><br />This is very different from the way we grew up watching complete matches on DD. Without any other distractions except for power cuts and news bulletins.<br /><br />The choice and ease of access of content nowadays is so mind-boggling that this lifetime is not enough to catch up with all that we want to consume. I am not even talking about the things we want to do.<br /><p style="text-align: left;">Too much content is the new normal and this week that feeling just grew deeper.</p>Along with too much content there is something else at play here. I call it the too many little bubbles phenomenon.<br /><br />I’ll highlight that with a few recent examples.
<h2 style="text-align: left;">Bigg Boss and the nameless contestants</h2><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSiE-DgtkezFKftRo2kRmHi4n3TvLOnRPqXGa6g3FBHrY5GqoYDxPrqSk_Iggh0d0QxcT5sWYyvg7zrjM-ihrVGrJFtvplJi-s0o1W_xv3jprQ0rwwm52_7CqcByB7_ERVMRB7HgPx4OM/s1003/Bigg+Boss+Telugu+5+Contestants.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="599" data-original-width="1003" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSiE-DgtkezFKftRo2kRmHi4n3TvLOnRPqXGa6g3FBHrY5GqoYDxPrqSk_Iggh0d0QxcT5sWYyvg7zrjM-ihrVGrJFtvplJi-s0o1W_xv3jprQ0rwwm52_7CqcByB7_ERVMRB7HgPx4OM/w640-h382/Bigg+Boss+Telugu+5+Contestants.png" width="640" /></a></div><p style="text-align: left;">Bigg Boss is a very popular show format in India and it has regional versions in multiple languages.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Season 5 of the Telugu version started last week. My mother tongue is Telugu and I have been an avid follower of this show during its second season.<br /></p><div>The current season has 19 contestants.<br /><br /></div><div>But I’ve heard of only four of those contestants before.<br /><br />The very fact that they are participants in a show that features local celebrities, should be reason enough for me to know most of them, or at least half of them, but 4 names out of 19 is a shocking ratio by any standards.<br /><br />Probe all the names individually and we’ll realise that each of them have their own set of loyal fans. Their own little bubbles that we are not aware of.<br /><br />Open Instagram and browse through the search tab and you’ll find random profiles with millions of followers and thousands of likes on their posts, but you would have never heard of those people before.<br /><br />Same happens on YouTube. Here are two classic examples.<h2 style="text-align: left;">The Billion+ Song</h2>Tell me honestly. Did you ever come across this song before?<div><br /></div>
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BBAyRBTfsOU?controls=0" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>
<div><p style="text-align: left;">I accidentally stumbled upon this song last week and I was blown away by the fact that it had billion plus views by then. I had never heard about this song until that moment, and it’s been around for more than two years.</p>This is one bubble from which I was ruthlessly excluded by YouTube’s algorithms :)<div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Who is Carry Minati?</h2><p style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDNc0V5ts8gYTTe2sr13E5Ai_arrJIhSnuyYipaeWseLrTDgWtbekYfbpJnd5oLmPPFyxHg24HXRpWhVsL-0m0THSYgo8n7YSgIcSzsePqigMwjUsz2K2MSmXIj0bQz0721L-mBsJLcLY/s852/Carry+Minati+04.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="434" data-original-width="852" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDNc0V5ts8gYTTe2sr13E5Ai_arrJIhSnuyYipaeWseLrTDgWtbekYfbpJnd5oLmPPFyxHg24HXRpWhVsL-0m0THSYgo8n7YSgIcSzsePqigMwjUsz2K2MSmXIj0bQz0721L-mBsJLcLY/w640-h326/Carry+Minati+04.png" width="640" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You will either laugh at my question or really question your existence if you don’t know who he is.<br /><br />I asked the same question on Twitter one fine day last year, and my notifications tab blew up. This dude has 10 million more followers than the total number of Twitter users in India.<br /><br />Don’t beat yourself up if you have never heard of him before. That’s the law of bubbles at play.</div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Too many little bubbles</h2><div>Having access to Google, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp and other such platforms we believe we know about everything that’s happening in the world.</div><div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i></i></b></div><blockquote><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>It’s a lie....we are just citizens of our own little bubbles.</i></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div></blockquote><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>While our country, region or language will primarily decide which bubble we belong to — there are many more smaller bubbles we are a part of unknowingly, and are excluded from many others without a clue in the world.<br /><br />I blogged about this phenomenon extensively in the past. Here’s a snippet from a 2015 post of mine.<br /><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><i>"We are willingly providing intimate personal data to these systems, allowing them to understand us better, to track us 24x7 in return for a better experience. I want to know how different your bubble is compared to mine. </div><div><br />Do share this post with your friends too, to expand our own little bubble :)<br /><br />Cheers!!!<br /><br />Kartik Dayanand Boddapati<div><div><div><br /></div>

<div style="font-family: inherit;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Someone wrote to me recently on Twitter, saying he enjoys all my tweets there except for when I criticize Narendra Modi. His Blood Pressure goes up it seems.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We both laughed…but I also realized that it’s not just his problem. I get pissed off too, when I see people blindly defending some dumb action of the government.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Is it safe to say we both are in the same boat? Maybe – maybe not. </span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">It depends on whether we are looking at events in isolation or looking at the big picture. The CAA and NRC debate is a classic example of the same. </span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Most sensible people could put 2 and 2 together and see what this combo could do, and they protested. Whereas others chose to only look at the narrow picture – a part of the issue – and they continue to ask - how does CAA affect any Indian? It is only for refugees of 3 countries. </span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">They are basically parroting what the government has been telling us.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">However, many started seeing the big picture, thanks to Amit Shah’s speeches which clearly explain the chronology of events; yet, that’s a tough idea to comprehend – of discriminating a section of the society.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">That’s not possible we think; but this government hasn’t given people the confidence that it can be trusted with such things.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If demonetization can happen overnight, and if Article 370 can be revoked in Kashmir overnight. And if Devendra Fadnavis can be sworn in early in the morning - by revoking President’s rule via an ordinance - without anyone’s notice - neither the media nor other political parties, what stops them from not misusing the CAA and NRC framework? </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span>
<br>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><i>There is doubt in people’s minds – this government is up to some mischief is what they think.</i></b></span></blockquote>
<br>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><i><b>The trend is clear and is worrying if seen as a sequence of cascading events.</b></i></span></blockquote>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br>However, the main reason why I post this blog is to highlight a particular aspect of the CAA and NRC protests – an aspect that is linked to the blood pressure issue that I mentioned at the beginning and about why our government is adamant to accept this as a true people’s revolt.<br><br>To highlight my point, I’ll start with a hypothetical scenario.<br><br>Here it goes….</span><br>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">My story involves a bizarre paradox - a moral dilemma of sorts. It all started when I watched the film Padmaavat on the second day of its release.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;"><br> I loved the film. <div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;"><br>Putting aside the discussions about gender politics, Jauhar or the Hindu VS Muslim trope that’s been doing the rounds, the film and the climax appealed to me at a very basic level as a triumph in tragedy – where you feel sad that the good guys die at the end but also feel happy because they somehow end up looking heroic and victorious – like Jack in Titanic.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;"><br></span>

<div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: center;">
<strong><em><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 140%;">At the core
Padmaavat is a story about a clash of values!</span></span></em></strong></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Maharawal Ratan Singh’s culture dictates his values.
He is bound by its rules, like Kattappa from Baahubali. His decisions might
look stupid and impractical at times, but that is how he functions.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Rani Padmavati isn’t as rigid as Ratan and
doesn’t mind bending some of those values as the situation demands. We are
shown ample instances in the film where she displays these traits. She is
sorted in her mind.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Sultan Alauddin Khilji on the other hand has
a calculative and cunning mind along with a heart that is passionate and
relentless. A deadly concoction forming his value system – a non-existent one
at that. There is only one rule of war for him and that is victory (at any
cost).</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Throw all of them together and that’s the
story of Padmaavat.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Ratan lives and dies sticking to his values –
no compromise, no matter what, Khilji should never see Padmavati.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Padmavati lives and dies sticking to her
values - her victory lies in denying what Khilji’s heart desires. It’s her
choice of what I call a triumph in tragedy.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">That’s where the high point, the vindication
and moral victory lies for the audience too by upholding a value system we
think is right - by denying what Khilji seeks so desperately throughout the
movie.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">Justice we believe is served. That’s when the
tears happen. And the ensuing stupendous box office collections are nothing but
a validation of that sentiment.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">If even one of them skewed a little bit in a
different direction the outcome of the story would’ve been very different.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 15pt 0in; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 140%;">All sounds good. What’s my issue then?</span><br>

<br>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I watched the much talked about Malayalam movie Premam
earlier this year, almost a year after its theatrical release. Though I didn’t understand
a word of the language, I instantly <a href="https://twitter.com/KartikDayanand/status/742397159987908609" target="_blank"><b>fell in love</b></a> with the film. Maybe it was
the music, the locations, visuals, acting, chemistry, love, pimples, Java, or
god knows what…<b><i>the film was pure magic!<o:p></o:p></i></b><br>
<b><i><br></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Later, I came to know it was being remade in Telugu, my
native language. I felt it was a bold move, maybe a stupid one too...Premam is
a piece of ART, and ART is sacrosanct, not to be tampered with. Were the makers
committing blasphemy?<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To find the answers, I waited with bated breath for the
Telugu release. Caught the film during the first weekend, and then the
unexpected happened. <b><i><o:p></o:p></i></b><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>I walked in expecting to see a ‘copy paste remake’ but what I instead got
was an ‘upgraded version’ of the original. </i></b></blockquote>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br>
It felt as if the original Premam was put on a treadmill and
made to lose all the flab, in place of which it grew muscles – muscles called LOGIC.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It was a given that the director would make changes to the film to suit sensibilities of the Telugu audience, but he also added extraordinary depth to the narrative – tying up loose ends, giving meaning to
seemingly random occurrences, expanding the canvas of the film beyond its
confined settings, including the angle of parents into what was a one
dimensional narrative from the hero’s perspective in the original.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The soul of the film remained intact but the structure and
the interpretation of the soul now had far more weight and logic than the
original.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If someone were to remake the film in another language now,
they would have to without fail refer to the Telugu version as the starting
point.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This fact shook me to the core. It actually turned my world
upside down. <o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<b><i>Isn’t ART an absolute…how
can we have VERSIONS of it?</i></b></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<i><b>Wasn’t the original
film perfect as a piece of ART in itself?<br> </b><b><br></b><b>Is the concept of ORIGINALITY
overrated?</b></i></blockquote>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br></div>
These were the big question that ran on my mind. I
searched for answers. Introspected. Spent sleepless nights pondering over it.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Finally, I found the answers. I found them as parallels in
some real life scenarios, and in the most unexpected of all places – the movie
itself.<o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That’s what I am going to talk about next. <o:p></o:p><br>
<br></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Sorry to disappoint you if you were expecting a detailed
review of the film; that definitely warrants another post. <o:p></o:p><br>

I shall begin with the real life parallels first and then the movie. Once you are done reading, do let me know what you think;
shall wait to hear from you.<o:p></o:p><br>

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><i><br></i></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">That was one question my son was repeatedly asking while we
were watching the movie ‘PK’. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Though old enough
to grasp basics of the world around him, the concept of a dancing car in ‘PK’
was alien to him. No wonder, the child’s curiosity kicked in and the above question
followed. There was no convincing answer to give him.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Similar is the state of PK, our alien from outer space. His
childlike curiosity constantly questioning the world around him; learning
answers the hard way – much to his bewilderment and our amusement. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">PK questions many aspects of our world, but there is one
thing I am particularly keen to explore further - the conclusions he arrives at
during his quest to reach god.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><i><br></i></b></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><i>God exists, but a medium (religion & rituals) and
messenger (god men) to reach god are unnecessary.</i></b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Is PK right in saying so? <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Maybe…but his childlike innocence can’t be a good enough reason
to completely believe him. How can we be certain that he is right? Maybe
he didn't meet the right people who could answer him; or maybe
it wasn't time for him to know the answers yet, just like
the mysteries of the dancing car for my son.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Don’t know what you think, but I believe there should be no
space for doubt or ignorance in our minds when it concerns such matters.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">There is another movie from the recent past which set me
thinking on similar lines - about god, the supernatural and our very own existence.
I now realize that most of the answers to PK might lie within that film. As the title of this post
suggests, that film is none other than Christopher Nolan’s space epic Interstellar.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">No, this </span>isn't<span style="font-family: inherit;"> a spoof post where PK gets into funny
situations when he encounters characters from Interstellar. We are getting into
some serious adult territory instead. Don’t say I </span>didn't<span style="font-family: inherit;"> warn you in advance.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Ever since I watched the film “The Matrix” in the late
90s, I've often wondered if what was shown in the film could become a reality
someday. It is highly unlikely, but for those who don't know what the Matrix is
all about, here is a brief Wikipedia entry about the film:</span></div>

only consume but also generate all of the data online via social networks and
other means which are powered by corporations that now wield immense power over
our lives – think Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><i><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">While I punch the keys on my laptop to write about the
Telugu film Manam, my feelings are similar - instead of blood, I have tears in
my eyes. Tears that refuse to stop long after the show got over. Tears that
seem to emanate from a complex set of emotions triggered by nostalgia, sadness
and joy - all at the same time. It is as if the movie has done some kind of
black magic on me. The only way for me to make sense of all those tears is to
write this blog post. Who knows, you might be feeling the same way too after watching
the film. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One basic assumption before watching Manam is that this is a
film about glorifying the decades old ANR legacy which starts with Akkineni
Nageswara Rao in the 1940s to his son Nagarjuna starting in the 80s and then onto
his grandson Naga Chaitanya starting in the new millennium – all of whom star
in this film. It is an easy temptation for the film makers to fall into a trap
of over the top hero worship but Manam pleasantly surprises and almost shocks
everyone with its approach to storytelling. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></i></b></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="font-family: inherit;">Manam isn’t just a film about
glorifying the legacy of one family but is a mirror to the existence and
continuity of life beyond the pendulum of life and death!</span></i></b></blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Very rarely do we come across films that tie in the elements
of deep philosophy and love while retaining the essence of glorifying a legacy.
Manam is that rare gem which achieves the impossible, and this is why it made
me cry…</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Free from the burden of the CM's chair, Arvind Kejriwal now seems to be in a hurry to reach out to a wider pan India audience. Post his resignation, he has already starred in (pun intended)
two prominent interviews by two top journalists of India, <a href="https://twitter.com/BDUTT/status/434765997568835584" target="_blank">Barkha Dutt</a> and

of free publicity. Kejriwal cleverly seems to avoid Times Now though. And
the best part, all the uncomfortable questions that people had for him, he let
Barkha and Rajdeep ask on their shows and answered them without fear. Whether the
answers were convincing or not, his conviction is all that seems to matter now.</span></div>

the guys who made the video, out of utter shock or joy, <a href="https://twitter.com/thetanmay/status/435045837781995522" target="_blank">tweeted</a> that they will now
